Today we kicked off the program with an introduction to Brunel University and a welcome lecture hosted by Adam, which set an exciting tone for the weeks ahead. We then headed to the lab to explore an elderly simulation experience, trying on equipment that mimics the sensory and movement impairments that come with aging. It was a humbling and eye-opening exercise that gave me a much greater appreciation for what older populations experience in their day to day lives. Afterward, we played netball for the first time as a group, which was a fantastic bonding experience and a great introduction to a sport that is not commonly seen back home in the US.
To cap off the day, we headed to Churchill Fish and Chips where I tried fish and chips for the first time. It was not necessarily my favorite meal, but I am glad I gave it a shot as fully immersing yourself in a new culture means being open to trying new things. We then ended the evening in Uxbridge for a pub night with the group, which was a great way to unwind and connect with everyone after such a packed first day.
